Laura’s tips to beat a motivation slump

Motivation – it’s something we often find ourselves looking for.

From looking for the motivation to exercise to the motivation to cook instead of ordering Uber Eats to the motivation to do the housework, we look to rely on it more than we might think.

However, more often than not, motivation is nowhere to be found and as a result we find ourselves in a motivation slump feeling deflated, unaccomplished and frustrated.

As much as we all wished motivation was as easy as a light to switch on, the reality is, it’s not always there and the lack of motivation either leads to one of two outcomes. The first being that we just don’t do whatever it is that we want to get done or, the second being that we just get on with it (no matter how much we’re dreading it). But when we choose the second outcome, to just get on with it, there’s a silver lining – the feeling of getting it done! You feel so damn accomplished and proud of yourself for completing a task that you’ve been putting off for longer than you’d like to admit.

Here are a few tips and tricks which I’ve learnt over the years that have helped me to get out of a motivation slump and I’d like to share them with you in the hope that they might help you too.

Tip 1. Remind yourself of how you'll feel once it's done.

It’s highly likely that you’ve already completed this task before and so you actually know how good it feels when it’s done. Sometimes reminding yourself is all you need to get up and go!

For me, this happens so often with moving my body. Whenever I’m feeling unmotivated to workout I remind myself of how good those post workout endorphins make me feel and how much it helps me to refocus in amongst the craziness of life.

Tip 2. Reassess the time you're looking to do the task.

When you’re feeling unmotivated to complete a task, sometimes the motivation is lacking purely due to when you’re trying to get it done. For example, if I’m wanting to change my sheets but I’m trying to do it after a long day of work, it’s probably not the best time to do it. Instead, if I make it a morning job which falls into the same time I usually make my bed, it’s going to be so much easier to get it done (plus the mornings have time pressure too which means I’ll likely smash it out in less time).

Tip 3. Find a new way to do it.

Often motivation can be lacking because we feel uninspired or bored of how we’ve been doing it. Of course there are some things which we can’t change how they’re done, but we can make it a little more fun. For example, to make cleaning a little more enjoyable I’ll listen to music or podcast or if I’m feeling unmotivated to cook, I’ll try a try a new KIC recipe or get Dalton to cook with me.

When it comes to exercise, mixing it up helps me keep my motivation up and that’s why we make sure to offer to many workout styles on KIC – so you can have movement styles to suit your mood and keep your feeling motivated! Recently with the launch of KIC Minis, I’ve been able to either start one off and see how I’m feeling after or add one onto the end of another workout for an extra challenge.

I find that keeping things exciting and finding new ways to complete a task helps me feel motivated to get it done!

Tip 4. Practice gratitude.

Often we forget just how lucky we are to have the ability, the opportunity and the safety to perform certain tasks. For example, no matter how much you might love your job, there are always going to be tasks that you don’t enjoy doing or feel completely unmotivated to get done. If I ever find myself in that mindset I take a moment to step back and re-asses how lucky I am to have a stable income, a supportive team and the opportunity to learn.

By practicing gratitude we’re able to put things into perspective and sometimes that’s all the motivation you need.

Tip 5. Just start.

Starting is ALWAYS the hardest part. I usually find that my motivation kicks in after I’ve started and not before. So if I’m in a motivation slump instead of waiting for my motivation to show up, I just start. It’s not easy but I’m always so proud of myself for pushing through.

I hope that these tips help you tackle any motivation slumps that you encounter. Please also remember to be kind to yourself and know that it’s okay to rest and reassess tomorrow.

The motivation slump is a common place that we all find ourselves in at one point or anther, myself included! What’s most important is that we don’t let it consume us and that we remind ourselves that we can do anything we set our minds to.
